Richard and Kahlan are finally married and enjoying their wedding night back in the Spirit House in the Village of the Mud People. About the Author
Terry Goodkind is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Sword of Truth series, Richard and Kahlan stories, author of The Law of Nines, foundational novel The First Confessor The Legend of Magda Searus, as-well-as collaborator for Legend of the Seeker, the Sam Raimi produced, Disney ABC television series based on The Sword of Truth books.

I'm enjoying each book in the series a little less than the last and after looking at reviews of the upcoming few, think this is where Richard, Kahlan, and I part ways. The worldbuilding is wonderful. I wish the books were more tightly edited. But the never ending trope of stereotypically awful behavior by women is killing me. How often has the (sometimes amazingly) competent and powerful Kahlan taken time out of heated melee to whine about her love not paying attention to her?? Come on. The women characters are generally shallow and stupid and pander to the worst stereotypes. The only thing worse are the incessant, but very clearly written(!) descriptions of rape and violence to women, which tend to be more detailed than those of the men's fights and leave a very unpleasant residue.Product details

Soul of the Fire Sword of Truth Book 5 eBook Terry Goodkind Reviews
I was puzzled at first over how the book was rated by the readers because the beginning of the book was quite engaging despite much dwelling on characters other than Richard and Kahlan, but Goodkind must continue his world building in order to believably encompass the depth of his world, to truly make the story important on a grand scale, so the reader can properly appreciate a world trembling on the brink of disaster. Unfortunately, this leads to the incredible let down on in the final pages of the book where you can all but hear the author putting on the brakes--oh no--the author thinks--this book is going to be way too long if I try to reach a reasonable resolution as in the first four books! Thus the inconceivable disposition of characters at the end of the story. Terry Goodkind obviously had something more on his mind than this book as it fizzles out to an extremely weak conclusion. This is not to say the book isn't good, it is, and I'm happy I read it and will go on to read book 6, There also must be some reason much of the book dwelt upon the good people of Anderith, although the "resolution" of the story would suggest their existence is now moot. And abruptly so, I might add. Richard and Kahlan seemed especially at odds in this book where one would think an idea good and the other think it... not good, the upshot of the disagreement being one (or the other) would give way to the other with reservations "Well, okay, but I still don't agree" Kind of thing, strictly (and transparently) in service to the plot if not common sense. It's a good read, if you're reading the series, don't get discouraged. I hear it gets good again.
I am basically reviewing the first 13 books of this series since I read them all recently. An average of 3 is the best I can do, some are a little less not quite dipping to a rating of 2 and some actually creep toward a 4 rating but overall a 3 is the best I can do.
It's a shame really, some sections and scenes are very well written so much so they pull you in and you enjoy reading them but then the redundancies begin and pages and pages of Richard and Kahlan reminiscing or worrying or just missing the other. Please, too much some time.
Also, some of the lesser characters could be interesting in a similar way Terry Brooks builds his lesser characters before killing them off but all lesser characters here are giving short shrift
I am in no way a book critic or enthusiast. I just love a good story. So it's pretty hard for me to to type up any sort of review on a book. The reason why I'm doing it for this one is because a lot of reviews criticized the ending when there's nothing wrong with it.

Everyone mentions the way Richard banishes the chimes was ridiculous or he was too quick to find out at the last minute. Isn't that what happens in every book that has a character figuring something out? You can't get to the end plot without figuring out how to solve the possible problem. "Oh, sorry. I didn't find out how to banish the chimes so Jagang gets to take over Anderith and we lose." Richard found out a whole lot on Joseph Ander and managed to find out what kind of character he is. Richard's a Seeker. Dude know's how to put 2 and 2 together. Based on all of that he was able to realize the Dominie Dirtch and the Chimes were connected. Basically Joseph Ander used the Chimes to power the Dominie Dirtch.
The next issue is that there were complaints about plot holes and too many additional characters that the author didn't know how to write. Which this is not true. This is one of those books where you wonder what this person has to do with the story and it all comes together near or at the end. I was skeptical about Fitch and Beata's story as well, but I actually enjoyed where their story went in the end. You only see a few chapters on them because they're not too important to the plot. Also the story with Dalton Campbell plays a huge significant role since he helps the Imperial Order in taking over. That doesn't seem like it's such a small role to me like everyone else is saying.

The only problem I have with the book is how Goodkind likes to repeat things that have already been mentioned a couple of paragraphs ago. Just when I think the character was going to mention something else important, he/she repeats what they've already mentioned. Goodkind is a good writer. He built a very broad world that seems like more gets added onto. Which I'm glad. It's definitely worth a purchase.
